First Week of School

My first couple days of my new classes went pretty good. I ran into a problem this morning with my class of 35 in the LMC room with using the overhead projector and not having enough room to use it, therefore I have decided not to. It is so wonderful to see all my old students in my classes again and it is already wonderful learning all my new students. I am also debating whether or not to use all our new tools from our textbooks. I tried using the notebooks for students today, however I am finding that the kids don't like to use them!!! I was so shocked by this!!! For me, I don't think they are good because there is so much research out there saying that the more times students write things down again and again the more it is going to stick in their brain. With our new notebooks they just have to listen and fill in the blank. They will be a great resource, however for my students that have special needs and have a hard time taking notes. Overall, it was a good two days and I am excited for next week!!!

What were you trying to use the overhead projector for and is there some other way to accomplish what you wanted to accomplish? Maybe we can all brainstorm together some way to make it happen - even with 35 students in the LMC classroom!

We just recieved the new text books that fit our new curriculum and they have this (what I thought before looking at it) awesome notetaking guide for students to write in. I was hesitant to use it because there is so much research out there that states information about writing things down and information retention in the brain. So I tried using them the first day and I hated them as well as my students shared with me they actually would prefer writing their own notes. So I am not sure the overhead is going to be a problem anymore. The publisher provided overhead copies of what the students have to "fill in the blanks as we go along". I found that using the notes that were provided took away my teaching personality and fun in teaching. The students thought it was more boring as well. Another thing I was shocked with was the fact that it took almost the entire hour of lecturing using the notes provided and when teaching the same material to my 2nd hour class it only took 20 minutes. This will allow us to do more explorations and discovery activites as well. It is all a learning process for me as well :) Thanks!!
